AHRI 700 is the refrigerant purity standard buyers will often see referenced on product specifications, reclamation paperwork, and quality documents. It does not tell you whether a refrigerant is the right match for a system. It helps answer a different question: whether the refrigerant quality being represented is tied to a recognized purity specification and appropriate testing methods.
For a buyer, that distinction matters. A cylinder can have the right refrigerant name on the label and still require document checks before it belongs in a purchasing file. Before opening a product page or approving a replenishment order, confirm the equipment refrigerant, the source of the gas, the applicable certification requirements, and whether the supplier can provide quality documentation that matches the product being ordered.
What AHRI 700 Means in Practical Buying Terms
AHRI describes Standard 700 as a specification for refrigerant purity and test methods for acceptability, covering listed refrigerants regardless of whether the source is new, reclaimed, or repackaged. That makes it useful when a buyer needs to separate product identity from product quality. The product identity tells you whether you are discussing R410A, R134a, R404A, R32, R454B, or another refrigerant. The purity document helps show whether the material has been checked against recognized limits for composition and contaminants.
That does not mean every buyer needs to interpret lab data like a chemist. It does mean the purchasing team should know what kind of document they are looking at. If you are comparing cylinders, start with the equipment nameplate and service recommendation, then compare refrigerants for compatible HVAC, refrigeration, and automotive A/C systems. SDS Documents and Purity Documents Are Not the Same Thing
A Safety Data Sheet is about hazard communication: product identification, hazards, first-aid language, handling and storage precautions, transport fields, and related safety information. It is important, but it is not the same as a certificate of analysis, batch record, or purity statement.
An AHRI 700-related purity document should help answer quality questions, such as whether the refrigerant composition and contaminants are within the referenced specification. Treat the SDS and the purity document as complementary checks. The SDS helps your team understand safety and communication duties. The purity document helps your team verify that the refrigerant quality being represented matches the order, especially when reclaimed or repackaged refrigerant is involved.
Contaminants Buyers Should Recognize
Appendix A to 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F lists refrigerant and contaminant characterization categories that include water, acidity, chloride, particulates or solids, high boiling residue, air and other non-condensables, and volatile impurities including other refrigerants. Buyers do not need to run those tests themselves, but they should understand why those terms appear on quality documents.
Water and acidity point to moisture and acid-related quality concerns. Chloride and particulates are signals that contamination screening matters, not just refrigerant name matching. High boiling residue can point to heavier residue left behind after volatile refrigerant components are removed. Non-condensables are usually associated with air or similar gases in the vapor phase, which is why the standard treats vapor sampling separately from liquid-phase checks. Volatile impurities, including other refrigerants, matter because blend composition and refrigerant identity are central to ordering the correct product.
For example, a buyer reviewing a 25 lb R410A refrigerant cylinder should first verify that the system is designed and labeled for R410A. The purity document is a second check: it supports product-quality review after compatibility has already been confirmed.
New, Reclaimed, and Repackaged Refrigerant Need Different Questions
AHRI 700 is relevant across sources, but the buyer questions change with the source of the refrigerant. For new refrigerant, ask whether the supplier can provide product specifications or a lot-specific certificate when needed. For repackaged refrigerant, confirm that the cylinder label, product name, and supporting paperwork stay aligned through the repackaging path.
Reclaimed refrigerant deserves extra attention because EPA distinguishes recovered, recycled, and reclaimed refrigerant. EPA explains that reclaimed refrigerant is reprocessed to applicable specifications in Appendix A, based on AHRI Standard 700, and verified using the prescribed analytical methodology. EPA also states that used refrigerant generally must be reclaimed by an EPA-certified reclaimer before resale to a new owner. That makes the reclaimer, batch record, and purity verification more than nice-to-have paperwork when reclaimed refrigerant enters the purchasing conversation.
This is also where buyers should avoid casual language. Recovered refrigerant, recycled refrigerant, reclaimed refrigerant, virgin refrigerant, and repackaged refrigerant are not interchangeable labels. If the quote, invoice, product page, SDS, and certificate use different source terms, pause and ask the supplier to clarify before the order is approved.
Questions to Ask Before Ordering
Use a short document check before turning a refrigerant quote into a purchase order:
- Does the equipment nameplate or service documentation call for this exact refrigerant?
- Is the product being sold as new, reclaimed, or repackaged refrigerant?
- Does the quality document reference AHRI 700 or the applicable regulatory purity specification?
- Does the document identify the refrigerant, lot or batch, supplier, and date clearly enough to match the order?
- Are contaminant categories such as water, acidity, chloride, particulates, high boiling residue, non-condensables, and volatile impurities addressed in a way that matches the represented product?
- If the refrigerant is reclaimed, is the reclaimer path and certification context clear?
- Do the SDS, label, invoice, and product listing use the same refrigerant name and source description?
These checks are not a substitute for technician judgment. They are a way to keep the purchasing file clean so the technician, facility manager, and supplier are all discussing the same material.
What AHRI 700 Does Not Decide
AHRI 700 does not make an incompatible refrigerant compatible. It does not override the equipment manufacturer, service label, compressor approval, charge limits, local code, or EPA certification requirements. It also does not turn a lower-GWP refrigerant into a drop-in replacement.
